Talairach models The Talairach brain is a standard brain defined by the french Dr. Jean Talairach in his book: "Co-Planar Stereotactic Atlas of the Human Brain" (Thieme, Stuttgart, 1988). Each page in the book describes a slice of the human brain within a 2 dimensional grid. Brain structures are given their own color. Brodman numbers (cytoarchitectural classification) are also designated.

This page functions as a library of VRML models. For several models both VRML1 and VRML2 model are defined. The VRML2 models are defined as PROTOs and should be used as EXTERNPROTOs.

The Brede Matlab toolbox can construct similar Talairach VRML2 models.

The VRML models on this pages can be included in your VRML worlds. Meters are used as the scaling parameter, and the center is at the usually anterior commisure. The orientation of the coordinate system is the same as the bicommisural coordinate system: X - ear to ear; Y - front (face) to back; Z - top to bottom. This is what the BrainMap database also uses.

Talairach Visible Human

Talairach Visible Human Man

The left and right hemisphere from the Visible Human atlas. The surfaces are constructed by Heather Drury and David Van Essen at the Van Essen Lab, Washington University School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. [http://v1.wustl.edu/]. Their program "Caret" can also be used to visualize the Visible Human Man: Consult their homepage.

The Visible Human brain has been aligned to the Talairach Atlas with the Spatial Normalization software from Jack Lancaster [http://ric.uthscsa.edu].

The left hemisphere is just the right hemisphere mirrored.

Talairach Atlas Slice Talairach Atlas Slice. A polygon with the slice from the book as texture.

The slice can be draged in the Z-direction. It will change the texture according to the position. Note that not all slices are presently defined and the polygon can be put between two slices.

Talairach rulers. The rulers are rotated to make them visible from two planar views. The unit on the ruler is centimeters, and the texture is a scanning of a real ruler.
